Design, Engineering, Manufacture and Installation of Custom Shade Sails

Background
In 2021 The City of Dayton contracted with Robertson Construction for the construction of a new library. The library was to be 24,000 square-feet and includes a community room, five tutor rooms, two conference rooms, and a themed children's area. The design included shade sails shaped color matched to several architectural details in the library itself. It was intended to incorporate these sails into the structure itself. This posed several challenges from both a design and engineering standpoint.
Solution
Due to the exacting requirements of the project, Robertson required the services of a company capable of designing a system essentially from scratch rather than one who would attempt to modify an off the shelf design. At Signature, we operate from a clean-sheet design philosophy. We were able to work closely in conjunction with project engineers and architects to ensure that our solution met both the vision for the project and met the exacting engineering requirements inherent in anchoring a sail system to another structure.
Details
Signature utilized Ferrari 502V2 fabrics in three different colors– poppy, carrot, and orange to fabricate 75 separate shade sails, all of which were connected to the main structures utilizing stainless steel cables and membrane plates. The result was a striking design and a beautiful result. Signature received and Award of Merit for its participation in the project.
